Due to the pandemic, the government was obliged to impose lockdown measures in many areas. People were encouraged to stay in their house and refrain from going around. As a result, Americans spent more time at home than on the road. And most of them are using their vehicles sparingly.
Since they spent time driving their cars, Americans question the need for car insurance to stay more at home. The quick answer is it is mandatory. In most US states, drivers are required to have auto insurance.
Fewer Cars Do Not Equate to Less Road Accidents
You might argue that fewer vehicles on the road correlate to fewer car accidents. Sadly, it is not true. Yes, the volume of traffic decreased in the major cities that implemented lockdown measures. However, in the same period, road accidents climbed by at least 50%.
In Minnesota, road fatalities surged by 50% even though there are fewer cars on the road. In California, the lockdown measure did little to reduce road mishaps. For the same period, the state recorded an increase in vehicle collisions because people drive faster while on the road. Even in New York, speeding violations skyrocketed by 57% during the stay at home period.
Therefore, a reduction in traffic volume is not an indicator of fewer car accidents. People's driving behavior plays a significant role in road fatalities.
You Need Auto Insurance for These Reasons
Even in a time of the pandemic, you still need to get out of the house occasionally to buy essentials. If you are hitting the road, there is always a risk that you might get involved in a road accident. Therefore, it is crucial to have car insurance to protect you and your vehicle from unfortunate circumstances on the road.
