The US might be one of the most developed countries in the world, but that doesn’t exempt it from mother nature’s visits. If you’re planning on traveling to the US during the rainy season, then you better take note which cities are the most vulnerable to flood to help you prepare. SANDY HOOK, NEW JERSEY
Sandy Hook is known for its famous tourist spots: a historic resort town with its beachfront community and a convenient commute to a breathtaking view of New York City. If flooding gets too extreme, it may have the potential to drown most of the city. Sandy Hook has experienced devastating floods in the past decades that rose higher than 8.7 feet. WASHINGTON, D.C. Washington has been known to host the federal government for years. Business, education, and construction are among the industries in Washington that are proliferating. There is no other city in the US with important political history occurrences than Washington. The city has flooded several times, and because it’s a well-known tourist destination, it will take time for evacuation during a storm. ANNAPOLIS, MARYLAND Flooding usually occurs in Annapolis with every massive storm that happens at the Chesapeake Bay. The city is famous for the original 18th-century buildings that no other city in America has. It is also recently developing technological advancements, such as focuses on fiber optics, environmental concerns, and medical supplies. Floods would jeopardize this progress and the historical structures in the city. It has a current flood rate of 33 days in a year. NORFOLK, VIRGINIA The famous navy town is home to major shipping ports and a flourishing shipbuilding industry that is associated with millions of tons of cargo every year. The surrounding waterfront structures in Norfolk, and the continuous rise in sea level makes the city at risk for floods. Hurricane Sandy, one of the recent significant storms in the US, had a total cost of $50 billion in damages along with a flooded interstate and 100 smaller roads. SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA Floods and earthquakes have been known to happen in San Francisco. A historic earthquake happened in 1906 that almost burned the whole city down. In 1862, the capital of California was moved temporarily to San Francisco for five months due to constant flooding. Covering many states, it took several days before the flood subsided. With an estimated $10 million in property damage, the city was forced into a state of bankruptcy. Most of the time, an increase in ocean water levels and particular atmospheric conditions cause nuisance flooding. Make sure you have the necessities required for instances of a flood. Create a flood safety plan and an exit strategy in situations for needed evacuation.
